The Broken Hill Mountain Bike Club is a not for profit organisation which aims to promote fun, fitness and friendship combined with fair competition, against the backdrop of the unique and magnificent outdoor environment that only Broken Hill can offer.
Poker Race 2011
The Broken Hill Mountain Bike Club was officially formed on the 12th day of September, 2005, and is affiliated with Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA). It had operated under the YMCA Triathlon and Duathlon Club, from the 28th September 1997. The Club at that stage held triathlons, fun runs and duathlons, and as the popularity of mountain biking increased, the club decided to incorporate mountain biking into its already impressive variety of events.
As the years rolled by and the club continued to grow, in June 2005 with 95 financial members, the club faced the reality of ever increasing insurance demands, and it was no longer an option for the club to continue being protected by the YMCAs' insurance provider. The committee, supported by a majority of members, made the decision to affiliate with MTBA, and operate solely as a mountain bike club. This was a sad day, and the end of a very unique club, which many people over the years, had put a great deal of time, effort, and dedication into; not to mention the fun and fitness it had brought to the lives of so many competitors.
The Mountain Bike Club is continuing to grow, and thanks to the teamwork and friendship of the members, will continue to do so. The Club hosts an annual Poker Race at the Silverton Heritage Trail on the long weekend in June, as well as 12 Club races per calendar year (senior male, senior female & junior categories), and will be aiming to introduce regular social rides in 2006.
Monthly meetings are held at the Mulga Hill Tavern 6.00pm for dinner if interested and meeting starts at 7.00p.m.on the first Tuesday of every month, and all members are most welcome to attend.
THE CLUB AIMS TO:
- Supports and promotes mountain bike riding, both competively and recreationally by holding races and social rides.
- Promotes physical activity.
- Encourages junior rides.
- Plan social events in order to increase interest in the Club.
- Provides a unique way for members to experience the Broken Hill environment; andsupport community events, such as the Annual Broken Hill Christmas Pageant.
